The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, a cooperative effort between the National Park Service and four honored sites, celebrates the ingenuity and innovation of three exceptional Dayton residents and childhood friends: Wilber Wright, Orville Wright and Paul Laurence Dunbar. Dayton's most famous duo, the inventive Wright Brothers soared above their start at a bicycle shop to become leaders in the field of aviation and the first to create powered flight. The first recognized African-American writer and poet laureate, Paul Laurence Dunbar was also a Dayton native and friend of the Wright Brothers. Dunbar created a wealth of work, from novels and plays to more than 400 poems chronicling the African-American experience.
