FeaturesRembrandt and The Golden Age of Dutch Art Exhibit at The Dayton Art Institute Through January 7, 2007In celebration of the 400th anniversary of Rembrandt’s birth, The Dayton Art Institute presents the American premier of REMBRANDT AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF DUTCH ART: Treasures from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Open now through January 7, 2007, The Dayton Art Institute is one of only three U.S. museums to offer this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see rare Dutch masterpieces while the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam undergoes an extensive renovation and expansion project. Following its American debut in Dayton, the exhibition travels to the Phoenix Art Museum in Phoenix, Arizona and the Portland Art Museum in Portland, Oregon. For more than two years, all three museums have been involved in a unique collaboration with the director, Professor Ronald de Leeuw, and the curatorial staff of the Rijksmuseum to make this extraordinary exhibition available to the American public. Works of art in the exhibition include objects that the Rijksmuseum will consent to lend only on very rare occasions. Notable masterpieces in the show include Rembrandt’s self-portrait, his portrait of his wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh, and Frans Hals’ portrait of Nicolaes Hasselaer. The exhibition also includes a number of striking self-portraits not only by Rembrandt, but also by Jan Steen, Adriaen van der Werff and Gerard Dou. Portraits of the artists by their fellow painters are also included. These paintings offer a fascinating opportunity to see the individual artist, his working environment and living conditions. A selection of still life paintings demonstrates the subjects and painting techniques for which Dutch painting is so famous. Additionally, outstanding examples of landscapes include Jan van Goyen’s View of a Town on a River and Jacob van Ruisdael’s Rocky Landscape. The exhibition also features decorative art objects including sculptures, delftware and several examples of glass. |

Dayton/Montgomery County CVB Provides New Welcome Signage for the Dayton International AirportThe Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau was pleased to design, create and provide new “Welcome To Dayton, The Birthplace of Aviation!” signage for the Dayton International Airport. The new signs replace the old signs located on the I-70 Airport Access Road just north of National Road/Interstate 40.
“The CVB felt it was important to have a welcome message for visitors and residents to the Dayton area with attractive signage that underscores our branding as the birthplace of aviation and that better reflects the progressive spirit of our community" states Dayton/Montgomery County CVB President/CEO Jacquelyn Y. Powell. According to Sharon Sears, Marketing and Public Relations Manager for the Dayton International Airport, nearly three million people, both passengers and "meeters and greeters" come to the Airport annually. “In the future, the City of Dayton and the Dayton International Airport may add new signs on Terminal Drive to welcome our passengers to the area. Until that time, we are very appreciative of the CVB’s working with us to provide these beautiful signs” added Sears. |

ABA's Top 100 Selection Committee evaluated hundreds of events and selected the Vectren Dayton Air Show as one of the best events to experience via motorcoach next year. Peter J. Pantuso, ABA's president and CEO, unveiled the 2007 Top 100 Events at ceremonies in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Sept. 6. During the past 25 years, ABA's Top 100 Events publication has become an internationally recognized event directory for bus and tour operators, the travel industry and the general public. A description of the event and contact information is included in the Top 100 Events publication, published as a supplement to the September/October issue of Destinations magazine. In addition, the entire Top 100 list and specific event information will be listed on ABA's website at www.buses.org. The CVB was proud to nominate the 2007 Vectren Dayton Air Show and extremely pleased that this noteworthy Dayton event is being recognized. President's CornerI am pleased to report that the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau recently won six industry awards including three Ohio Society of Association Executives Achievement Awards, two Ohio Association of Convention & Visitors Bureau MIDDY Awards, and one Ohio Travel Association Ruby Award. These industry awards are a real honor, an affirmation that our marketing efforts are on target, and positive recognition of effective differentiation among our competitive set. The CVB’s work was recognized in three categories with OSAE Achievement Awards—The 2006 Destination Dayton Visitors Guide, won in the 2006 destination publications category, the CVB’s “Dayton Drives Excitement” campaign won in the marketing campaign category, and the Southwest Ohio Sports Zone marketing materials won in the multiple publications category. Nearly 80 entries from state associations, state convention and visitors bureaus, and industry vendor and supplier representatives were eligible in this year’s competition. The awards were bestowed during the OSAE Annual Conference held in Columbus, Ohio. The state association market is an important convention and event market for the Dayton/Montgomery County community and our competition among Ohio cities to host various events is tough. The Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) won two first place industry awards in the annual Ohio Association of Convention & Visitors Bureau’s (OACVB) MIDDY Award competition. The word “Middy’s” reflects our region of the country as well as the states contiguous to Ohio and the competition was open to all members of OACVB from this region. The competition featured materials utilized in destination marketing and tourism development. The CVB’s work was recognized in two categories: Electronic Communications and Specialties. The CVB’s “Dayton Drives Excitement” video prepared for and presented at the Religious Conference Managers Association (RCMA) 1,000+ attendee convention won first place in the electronic communications category and the Wilbear Aviator Teddy Bear and Wilbear Key Chain won first place in the Ad Specialties category. Approximately 75 entries from across the region were eligible in this year’s competition. The awards were given during the OACVB Annual Conference held in late September in New Philadelphia, Ohio. The Dayton/Montgomery County CVB is part of a five county collaborative effort—the Southwest Ohio Sports Zone--- to market the region to sporting event and tournament planners. Together the group designed and created a Southwest Ohio Sports Zone Resource Directory which won an Ohio Travel Association Ruby Award. Nearly 100 entries were received. The Dayton/Montgomery County CVB will continue to strive to produce creative award-winning marketing materials to generate overnight business for the Dayton/Montgomery County community. Jacquelyn Y.
