Mead CUSA Cup Soccer Tournament Scores High for Greater Dayton Community

The 29th Annual MEAD CUSA (Centerville United Soccer Association) CUP Youth Soccer Tournament will kick-off Friday, August 29, 2008 and continue through Monday, September 1, 2008. Four hundred and fifty youth soccer teams from seventeen states and Canada constituting over 21,000 people are expected to participate in this Greater Dayton area Labor Day weekend tournament. All games are played within three sites in Greater Dayton Ohio (Dayton NCR Old River Park Fields, Centerville's Oak Grove Park and the Ankeney Soccer Complex in Beavercreek). All Semi and Final matches are played at the Ankeney Soccer Complex. Mandatory registration will be held Friday, August 29, from 6:00-9:00pm at the Dayton Marriott Hotel.

"This annual soccer tournament is a wonderful event for our community to host. The tournament generates significant business for area hotels, motels, restaurants and retail. Sporting events are big business for our community and the Mead CUSA Cup Youth Soccer Tournament is one of the largest events we're fortunate to host. The numerous players, teams and families, attired in bright soccer gear, can be noticed throughout the area over the holiday weekend" states Jacquelyn Y. Powell, Dayton/Montgomery County CVB President & CEO.

Dan Monahan, the tournament's director adds, "I'd like to recognize and thank our title sponsor, MEAD Corporation, and the 450 volunteers who ensure the tournament runs smoothly. Without the tremendous support from these groups the tournament would not be possible".

The Tournament format calls for three preliminary round games with Semi and Final Matches in each division. Individual and Team trophies will be awarded for 1st and 2nd places. Semi-Final participants will receive individual medals. All U-8 and U-9 teams will receive participation awards.

In Remembrance

The Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau is proud of and extremely grateful for the friendship, warmth, professionalism, and positive community spirit demonstrated by three stellar CVB Ambassadors who have passed away this year----Steve Braverman, Jim Landefeld and Shirley Marbury. It was a privilege and honor to work with them and to claim them as part of "the CVB Family." Steve, Jim and Shirley all worked at the CVB's Dayton International Airport Information Station. It is with heavy but grateful hearts that we reflect upon their full lives and the time and gifts they shared with the Dayton/Montgomery County CVB, our community and its many visitors.

Four Inducted Into National Aviation Hall of Fame

Four legends of flight were formally honored in Dayton July 19th when they were officially inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame at the 47th Annual Enshrinement Dinner and Ceremony.

Each year, the NAHF Board of Nominations, a voting body comprised of over 130 air and space professionals nationwide, selects the handful of individuals to be recognized for their aviation achievements through enshrinement into the NAHF.

The 2008 class of inductees is a diverse group of individuals including a WWII triple ace, an airline mogul, a naval aviation pioneer and an aerobatic champion. Their formal enshrinement took place in Dayton - The Birthplace of Aviation - on Saturday, July 19, 2008, where they joined the 195 legends of flight previously honored by the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Often referred to as "America's Oscar Night of Aviation," the NAHF enshrinement celebration in July attracted hundreds of industry leaders, government and defense officials, former enshrinees, and aviation enthusiasts worldwide.

The Class of 2008 included: Col. Clarence E. "Bud" Anderson, USAF (Ret.), veteran WWII triple ace and experimental test pilot; Herbert D. Kelleher, co-founder, former CEO, and Executive Chairman of Southwest Airlines; the late William A. Moffett, architect of naval military aviation; and Sean D. Tucker, champion aerobatic air show performer and instructor.

2008 Vectren Dayton Air Show a Success!

The 34th annual Vectren Dayton Air Show presented by Kroger in late July at the Dayton International Airport was a big success with approximately 76,000 people in attendance. Headlining the military feature attractions was the amazing U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor Flight Demonstration, a first for Dayton. The Raptor is the world's most advanced fighter aircraft. "We were absolutely ecstatic that Dayton was selected as an F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team show site," stated Michael Emoff, Chairman of the USATS Board of Trustees, producers of the event. "The Raptor is the top aircraft in the air show circuit and our spectators marveled at the incredible maneuvers this aircraft made in the air."

The headlining civilian performer was Sean D. Tucker, a National Aviation Hall of Fame 2008 Inductee. Known as the world's premier air show performer, Sean and Team Oracle Extreme flew his custom-built 400 horsepower Challenger II biplane. Twice during the performance, Sean flew his aircraft backwards -straight down - tail-first at more than 100 mph. His extraordinary skill as a pilot has resulted in him being named a 2007 "Living Legends of Flight" placing him into an elite group of aviators such as General Jimmy Doolittle, General "Chuck" Yeager and Bob Hoover.

Founded in 1975, the Vectren Dayton Air Show presented by Kroger is one of the country's premier air shows. The event showcased military jet demonstrations, world-class aerobatic champions and entertainment for the whole family celebrating Dayton's rich aviation heritage as home of the Wright Brothers and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Dayton Campus Connect Event September 13th

The new Dayton Campus Connect program will officially kick-off with a celebration for all area college students in downtown Dayton on Saturday, September 13th from 4-8pm. Various businesses and organizations, including the Dayton/Montgomery County CVB, will host exhibit booths on Main Street to promote their services to the students. The event will feature "fun and interactive" exhibits targeted at college-age students. The goal is to fuel economic growth by encouraging college students to study, live and work in the area. A first step is to help them become more engaged in and embraced by the community during their college years here. By demonstrating the personal and professional fulfillment opportunities in the region throughout the student life cycle---from college prospect, to enrolled student, to recent graduate, the hope is to increase the pool of college-educated workers who choose to live and work in the region after they complete their undergraduate or graduate degrees. Mark your calendar and check out this free, fun event. For more information log onto www.downtowndayton.org.

CVB President Powell accepts a plaque from the Mayor of LeMans France, Jean-Claude Boulard

CVB President Meets With US Ambassador to France

Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau President/CEO Jacquelyn Y. Powell was among a contingency of Greater Daytonians who traveled to Le Mans, France to promote Dayton as the Birthplace of Aviation and to tell the region's story at international gatherings of prominent figures in aviation, tourism and economic development. The City of Le Mans France was celebrating the centennial of Wilbur Wright's 1908 flights in Le Mans that electrified Europe by demonstrating practical flight.

Powell attended a private luncheon with the U.S. Ambassador to France, Craig Roberts Stapleton, the Mayor of Le Mans Jean-Claude Boulard, and John Paul Couasnon, President of the Tourism Office and Managing Director of Le Mans, France Economic Development Agency. Powell was also a guest of honor at the Le Mans Rotary Club meeting. "The Wright Brothers are highly revered in this French community and it was an honor to share Dayton's unique and significant story as it relates to Wilbur and Orville and the invention of flight. We were able to make connections with our counter-parts in Le Mans, France and discuss opportunities for tourism as a means of economic development" stated Powell.

The CVB President was with a group that included among others, Amanda Wright Lane, the great-grandniece of Wilbur and Orville Wright, Larry Blake, Superintendent of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, and John Bosch, Chairman of the National Aviation Heritage Alliance and President of the Commander Aero Inc. aircraft maintenance business at Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport.

President’s Corner

As President & CEO of the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau I am pleased to share some recent and exciting happenings in our organization.

Since the beginning of this year we have been pleased to welcome three talented individuals to the CVB. Pierre Le and Ann Upthegrove-Vore have come on board as convention sales managers. Le, an Ohioan and Bowling Green University graduate was most recently working in Orlando Florida for both Disney and Wyndham. He handles the state association and fraternal convention sales markets. Upthegrove-Vore is a native of our area (Vandalia) who handles the religious and national convention sales markets. Upthegrove-Vore has extensive experience in the hospitality market most recently with US Airways and the Vectren Dayton Air Show. Heather Casagrande joins the staff as tourism sales coordinator. Casagrande, a graduate of Ohio University, is originally from Cincinnati and has extensive experience in both hotel sales and group tour sales, most recently working at Ohio Travel Treasures.

In addition to our new staff members the CVB has invested in a new customer relationship management software package, simpleviewTM, that will enable us to streamline our services to current and potential customers and improve the overall efficacy of our operations. We are also pleased to launch an updated and revised website www.daytoncvb.com which should enable us to better promote Dayton/Montgomery County's many offerings to visitors, meeting planners and area residents and ultimately drive more business to our wonderful community.
