Southwest Ohio Sports Zone Collaborative Bids on AAU Junior Olympic GamesThe Southwest Ohio Sports Zone (SWOSZ), a collaborative marketing initiative of the Dayton/ Montgomery County, Greene County, Warren County, Miami and Clark County CVBs, hosted a group of Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) representatives October 4-6, 2008, on a final site visit for a bid to host the AAU Junior Olympic (JO) Games. The Southwest Ohio Sports Zone, a group spearheaded by the Dayton/Montgomery County CVB, has been working collectively for nearly two years to be considered as a destination for the AAU JO Games. The AAU JO Games would bring nearly 30,000 athletes to the area for a ten day period in July/August. Sports facilities and venues would be utilized in each of the five SWOSZ counties to host over 15 sporting competitions ranging from track and field to swimming. U.D. Arena would serve as the AAU JO Games athlete registration site and Welcome Stadium would host the Opening Ceremonies, the Parade of Athletes, and the track and field events which account for over 60% of the registered athletes. The AAU JO Games would fill Dayton/Montgomery County hotels and motels and utilize properties in the neighboring SWOSZ counties. According to Dayton/Montgomery County President/CEO Jacquelyn Y. Powell, "This is the first time we have submitted a formal bid to host the AAU JO Games. The process has been extremely involved and has required participation from five CVBs. We are pleased to have made it through the various preliminary rounds and to the final list of destination contenders. Dayton and the SWOSZ have the potential to host the AAU JO Games for two of ten years between 2013 and 2022. AAU will announce the selected host sites during their annual convention this November. |

CVB Hosts British JournalistsThe Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau, along with several area attractions, hosted a group of British Travel Writers October 1, 2008. The British media group was in the United States as invited guests of the Great Lakes North America marketing and hospitality coalition of Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania travel and tourism partners. The writers, in the US from September 26th to October 3rd, visited Dayton en route from Indianapolis to Columbus. The British Journalists included: Ronnie Mackay, features writer for The Sun, a daily national paper with over 3 million in circulation; Graeme Lennox, motoring correspondent for The Sunday Mail, a national Scottish Sunday paper with over one half million in circulation; and James Herbert Walsh, a freelance writer who writes for many papers and publications in England and the U.K. Although their time in Dayton was limited to an afternoon, the journalists were escorted on a customized tour of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park sites---Wright Dunbar Interpretive Center and Wright Cycle Company, Wright Hall and the Wright Flyer III, Huffman Prairie Flying Field and Interpretive Center–as well as the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. They enjoyed lunch at Culps Cafe at Carillon Historical Park and a tour of Wright Hall and the 1905 Wright Flyer III with Amanda Wright Lane, great grandniece of Orville and Wilbur Wright. They left with a clear understanding of Dayton's place in the world as the "Birthplace of Aviation." |

Dale Huffman Among Those Inducted Into Dayton Walk of FameDale Huffman, Dayton Daily News columnist also know as "Mr Dayton", or the "Ambassador of Goodwill", was inducted into the Dayton Walk of Fame September 25th. Huffman was among five inductees (the other four posthumously) honored this year. He joins the long list of over 100 famous Dayton natives including such greats as Wilbur and Orville Wright. A celebratory luncheon honoring the winners and highlighting Dale Huffman was held at Sinclair Center following the ceremony in the Wright Dunbar Village. The Walk of Fame is located in the Wright-Dunbar Business Village. Stones bearing famous Daytonians names line the sidewalk. Huffman's stone with his name and a tribute can be found in front of the Bing Davis Studio at 1135 W. Third Street. During the course of his 50 years as a journalist, 40 with the Dayton Daily News and 35 as a columnist, Huffman has interviewed such celebrities and historic people as George Burns, Carol Burnett, Martin Luther King Jr., and John F. Kennedy. In accepting the award, Huffman said it "touches my heart, touches my soul and makes me think a lot." He talked about having been an orphan as a child and how that time instilled in him a "desire to help others" and to make a difference in the lives of others — something Huffman said he's been able to do through his writings. The Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau is proud and appreciative of Huffman's service as the Master of Ceremonies for each of the CVB's annual Community Ambassador Awards Breakfasts. Huffman, a past CVB Community Ambassador Award winner will emcee the CVB's 17th annual breakfast November 6, 2008. |

Presidents CornerIt has been a pleasure and a privilege to work in partnership with our current Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau Board Chair, Larry Blake, superintendent of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. On behalf of the CVB and the rest of our Board, I would like to thank Larry for his valued service and wish him and his family the very best in his retirement effective December 1, 2008. In addition to his many contributions to the CVB, Larry Blake was instrumental in leading the park's celebration of the 2003 centennial of the Wright Brothers' first successful powered flight. He oversaw the construction of the park's current facilities for the 2003 centennial of flight celebration. His management skills and spirit of cooperation were paramount in effectively bringing the various park partners and sites together. Congress created the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park in October 1992. (The park's first superintendent, Bill Gibson, retired in 1998. Larry Blake took over the position in January 1999.) The park commemorates the legacy of Wilbur and Orville Wright and their childhood friend poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. It includes the Wright Cycle Company complex, Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center, the Wright Flyer III, the Paul Laurence Dunbar State Memorial, and the Huffman Prairie Interpretive Center and Huffman Prairie Flying Field. Blake effectively oversaw the partnership and management of these geographically separated sites. According to Larry, whose December 1st retirement will end his nearly 34-year career with the National Park Service, "It's been a pretty exciting career, although I guess you always say that the most recent place you've worked has been the most exciting." Larry's career also included service at the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Springfield, Ill.; George Washington Carver National Monument near Joplin, Mo.; Scotts Bluff National Monument near Gering, Neb., and a site along the George Washington Memorial Parkway in northern Virginia. The Park Service is to announce his successor as park superintendent later. We thank Larry Blake for his fine service to our community and to the CVB and wish he and his wife Joan many happy years with their family and grandchildren in Springfield, Illinois. Jacquelyn Y. Powell |
