Dayton Hosts Vectren Dayton Air Show and National Aviation Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremonies
Dayton, the Birthplace of Aviation, is synonymous with flight and at no other time of the year is that more apparent then July. July in Dayton, means Vectren Dayton Air Show and National Aviation Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony.
The Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger, scheduled for July 18th and 19th is one of America's premier air shows. The Air Show showcases world-class aerobatic champions, military jet demonstrations and entertainment for the whole family celebrating Dayton's aviation heritage as home of the Wright Brothers, National Museum of the US Air Force and Wright Patterson AFB. Headliners at the 2009 Show include the USAF Thunderbirds, the Brazilian Air Force Smoke Squadron, the US Army Parachute Team "Golden Knights", Patty Wagstaff US National Aerobatic champion pilot, pilot and aerobatic legend Sean D. Tucker, and Tora, Tora, Tora, an eight aircraft dramatic reenactment of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, among other acts and numerous static displays. The Show offers families a terrific bargain with its Family 4 Pack. The Pack includes 4 show tickets, 4 hot dogs, 4 Pepsis, 1 souvenir program and free General Admission parking for only $64.95, a 40% savings off the full gate price. Along with that, the new Child/Senior Ticket is $12 in advance and $15 at the gate. This year's Air Show will be particularly appealing to families interested in a world-class, once-a-year entertainment event that is affordable.
Four aviation pioneers will be inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame during the Enshrinement Ceremony held Saturday, July 18th. The Class of 2009 is: Eileen Collins, USAF test pilot and first female Shuttle commander; Russell Meyer, Jr., former Chairman and CEO of Cessna Aircraft Company; the late James M. Stewart, WWII bomber pilot, award winning actor and airpower advocate; the late Edward H. White, II, West Point grad,USAF test pilot, and Gemini and Apollo astronaut. Collins and Meyer will personally accept their honors. The daughter of Stewart and son and daughter of White will attend, accepting enshrinement on behalf of their late fathers. The 2009 Milton Caniff "Spirit of Flight" Award recipient will be the Apollo Astronaut Crews, honored for their role in enabling man to walk on the lunar surface and return safely to earth. The award, bestowed annually upon a group or organization in recognition of its achievement in advancing aviation, will be presented at the NAHF President's Reception & Dinner in Dayton, Friday, July 17th - three days before the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. All surviving Apollo astronauts have been invited to accept the honor in person and attend the enshrinement ceremony the following night, which includes the induction of their fellow crewman, late Ed White, II, who lost his life in the Apollo 1 launch pad fire in 1967.

CUSA Kids Kick-off Dayton Soccer Tournament
"We welcome the annual MEAD CUSA (Centerville United Soccer Association) CUP Youth Soccer Tournament to our community September 4-7, 2009. The tournament generates significant business for area hotels, motels, restaurants and retail. Sporting events are big business for our community and the Mead CUSA Cup Youth Soccer Tournament is one of the largest events we're fortunate to host. The numerous players, teams and families, attired in bright soccer gear, can be noticed throughout the area over the holiday weekend" states Jacquelyn Y. Powell, Dayton/Montgomery County CVB President & CEO.
Four hundred and fifty youth soccer teams from seventeen states and Canada constituting over 21,000 people are expected to participate in this Greater Dayton area Labor Day weekend tournament. All games are played within three sites (Dayton NCR Old River Park Fields, Centerville's Oak Grove Park and the Ankeney Soccer Complex in Beavercreek). All Semi and Final matches are played at the Ankeney Soccer Complex. Mandatory registration will be held Friday, September 4th, from 6:00-9:00pm at the Dayton Marriott Hotel. The Tournament format calls for three preliminary round games with Semi and Final Matches in each division. Individual and Team trophies will be awarded for 1st and 2nd places. Semi-Final participants will receive individual medals. All U-8 and U-9 teams will receive participation awards.
Dan Monahan, the tournament's director adds, "I'd like to recognize and thank our title sponsor, MEAD Corporation, and the 450 volunteers who ensure the tournament runs smoothly. Without the tremendous support from these groups the tournament would not be possible."

National Museum of the US Air Force Hosts Giant Scale RC Model Aircraft Air Show and World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous
The world-renowned National Museum of the US Air Force is already recognized as Ohio's most popular free tourist attraction, with over 1.3 million visitors each year, and but events in 2009 are likely to add to that draw. The Museum will host two spectacular outdoor aviation events this September----The Giant Scale Radio-Controlled Model Aircraft Air Show September 4-6, 2009 and the World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous, September 25-27, 2009.
Over Labor Day weekend, visitors can watch daring acrobatics performed by model jets, helicopters and warbirds during a three-day air show of giant scale radio-controlled aircraft on the runway behind the National Museum of the US Air Force. The event, which is hosted each Labor Day weekend at the Museum is sponsored by the Dayton Ohio Giant Scalers. Hours for the free event are 8:30am-5pm each day.
At the end of September visitors can experience one of the nation's premier historical aviation events--the World War I Dawn Patrol Rendezvous, September 25-27, 2009. The three day event features vintage original and reproduction WWI aircraft, radio-controlled models, era automobiles, period re-enactors and a collector's show. Observe and experience the excitement and adrenaline of early air power at this special event which occurs every other year at the Museum and is presented by the Great War Aeroplanes Association. Hours for the free event are 9am-5pm Friday and Saturday and 9am-3pm Sunday.

CVB and Local Hospitality Partners Conduct Indianapolis Sales Blitz
A team of twelve Dayton/Montgomery County hospitality representatives, including four Dayton/Montgomery County CVB representatives and eight hoteliers spent two days in June calling on meeting planners in the sports, religious and fraternal markets in Indianapolis, Indiana. Collectively over 50 visits were made. The sales blitz, spearheaded by the CVB also included an evening reception where meeting planners enjoyed food, entertainment and visiting with the Dayton hospitality representatives. According to CVB director of sales, Anna Nash, "we were very pleased with the successfulness of this blitz. Meeting planners really recognize and appreciate the time and effort exhibited by a personal visit to their office. The camaraderie shown by a group of twelve Dayton hospitality representatives underscores Dayton's sincere interest in securing business for our community by penetrating an excellent feeder market."

- The Dayton/Montgomery County CVB hosted a Chicago Tribune travel editor for three days. His article on Dayton and aviation sites in Dayton will run in the July 5th edition of the Chicago Tribune.
- An interview with CVB president/CEO Jacquie Powell regarding the Dayton International Airport's renovations, expansions and upgrades will run in the upcoming issue of Airline Revenue News magazine.
- Watch FOX TV 45 and ABC TV 22 for monthly "on location" segments with reporter Rhonda Moore and CVB president/CEO Jacquie Powell as they highlight groups/events meeting in Dayton/Montgomery County.
- Greater Dayton area Five River MetroPark gardens as well as an interview the CVB president/CEO Jacquie Powell will be featured in a half hour GardenSmart program which will run on PBS stations across the nation.
- Be sure to watch WDTN TV2 to catch CVB president/CEO Jacquie Powell's monthly desk-side morning chat with anchor Pam Elliott regarding the various groups and conventions coming to Dayton/Montgomery County each month. Conventions are big business and translate into thousands of people and millions of outside dollars coming into our community.
- The 2009 Destination Dayton Visitor's Guide was polybagged with 25,000 copies of the May issue of Indianapolis monthly. Households in Indianapolis with an income over $75,000 and an interest in travel received the Dayton Visitors Guide which will hopefully spark interest in day and extended visits to Dayton.
- Listen to WHIO 1290 am radio for news director Jim Barrett's quarterly interviews with CVB president/CEO Jacquie Powell.
- The American Bus Association (ABA) has named the Vectren Dayton Air Show as on of the 2010 Top 100 Events recommended to motorcoach tour operators and bus owners nationwide. This award will provide excellent additional exposure for potential groups and visitors to Dayton and the Air Show!
- The Dayton/Montgomery County CVB will work with Great Lakes Publishing/Ohio Magazine to produce the 2010 and 2011 Destination Dayton Visitors Guide. 125,000 Visitor Guides will be published and distributed each year. - The Dayton Art Institute has expanded the dates of the William Morris Myth, Object and the Animal exhibit through August 2, 2009.

- Mark your calendars now for the October 5th 104th Anniversary of practical, powered flight. Relive the history of flight at Huffman Prairie Flying Field at 9:30am.
