Meeting Planner Win's Dayton/Montgomery County CVB Incentive Prize

Without a doubt, Dayton/Montgomery County is always an excellent site to hold meetings, conventions, reunions, sporting tournaments and events. To underscore Dayton’s branding as the Birthplace of Aviation and to differentiate Dayton from the competition (other cities) the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau offered a special incentive to meeting planners in 2009. Any meeting planner who completed a Request For Proposal with the Dayton/Montgomery County CVB in 2009 for an event in Dayton/Montgomery County in 2009 or any future year was eligible for a drawing to win two free airline tickets good for travel in the continental U.S. in 2010. James Brothers, meeting planner for Alpha Kappa Psi, was the lucky winner, having his name drawn from nearly 250 eligible candidates. Dayton Means NCAA March Madness

March Madness is right around the corner and the enthusiasm of Dayton roundball fans can't be beat. Dayton will once again play host to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Opening Round Game March 16, 2010 between the Men's Division I ranked 65th and 64th basketball teams, at the University of Dayton Arena. And the fun doesn't stop there; Dayton will continue to be in the spotlight Sunday March 28, 2010 and Tuesday, March 30, 2010 as four teams compete in the Women's NCAA Regionals, ultimately sending one team on to compete in the Women's Final Four. The two men's teams competing in the Opening Round will not be announced until Selection Sunday, March 14 and the women's brackets are announced Monday, March 15; however, avid Dayton basketball fans typically demonstrate their enthusiasm for the sport by making Dayton a heavily attended game site. Tickets can be purchased by calling 937-229-4433. Didn't get tickets? Not to worry, you can catch all of the men's action on CBS and the women's games on ESPN. The Greater Dayton community's consistent support of NCAA basketball, the outstanding University of Dayton Arena facility, and the University of Dayton staffs' excellent working relationship and reputation with the NCAA continue to make Dayton a popular stop in the NCAA Men's and Women's Division I Basketball Tournament site rotation. The Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau welcomes the NCAA teams, coaches and fans and wishes each player their personal best. Dayton Hosts Flyin' To the Hoop and President's Cup Volleyball Tournaments.

Dayton's popularity as a sports tournament host site will be evident as Dayton becomes "nothin' but net" in January and February. Basketballs will fly through nets at the Flyin' To the Hoop Tournament January 15-18, 2010 and volleyballs will be spiked over nets at the annual President's Cup Volleyball Tournament February 13-15, 2010.

Flyin' To The Hoop, founded by Eric Horstman in 2003, is an in-season prep basketball showcase held every Martin Luther King weekend in Dayton, Ohio. In 2009 USA Today ranked this event as one of the Top Ten Prep Events in the nation. The Invitational, presented by Samaritan North Hospital, will take place at the Trent Arena in Kettering. Over time, the tournament has had over 125+ players move on to play Division I college basketball. Additionally over eleven participating players (including Dunbar's Daequan Cook) have been drafted into the NBA. An all-time high of 31 teams will participate in the 2010 event.

The 10th annual Dayton Junior's President's Cup Volleyball Tournament will showcase the best volleyball youth talent in the Midwest. One hundred eighty volleyball teams representing youth from 11 states (WI, PA, NY, IL, IN, KY, OH, WVA,VA, TN, NC) and Canada will compete on 32 volleyball courts throughout the community at sites such as the Trent Arena, University of Dayton Recreation Center, and the Dayton Convention Center. Finals are held on Sunday February 15 at the Dayton Convention Center. Tournament Director Phil Anders expects over 200 college coaches to attend to recruit volleyball players.

"These two annual tournaments are wonderful events for Dayton/Montgomery County. Not only do they fill hotels and restaurants throughout the region, they provide great youth competition and wonderful family entertainment. Together the events generate nearly $5 million of economic impact in our community" states Jacquelyn Y. Powell, President/CEO of the Dayton/Montgomery County. Exciting big and little things are happening at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery this year!

A big $935k renovation is underway that will completely overhaul the Boonshoft’s Wild Ohio Zoo which will be renamed Discovery Zoo. A new aviary and rain forest exhibit, improved ventilation, expanded habitats, and a larger variety of animals are just a few of the improvements that will bring the facility up to current industry standards ahead of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium accreditation process in 2011. During the renovation Sushi and Shiloh, the Miami Valley’s most popular otters (along with 306 frozen lbs of smelt, sardines and homemade “otter patties”—if that doesn’t make you hungry we don’t know what will!), will take a six-month vacation at the Oglebay Park’s Good Zoo in Wheeling W. Va., and Madison the Bobcat will have a temporary hiatus at the Henson Robinson Zoo in Springfield, Ill. When these animals return to their improved and larger home they’ll have some new neighbors including a sloth, an eel, a dwarf caiman, bats, skunks, kinkajous and meerkats. According to Mark Meister, the museum’s president, the zoo is one of the museum’s most popular features and the improvements should only increase its popularity.

Exciting "little" things will also be happening at the Boonshoft in 2010. From January 30—May 2, 2010 visitors are invited to experience a special traveling exhibit— Too Small to See. You can go from teeny to tiny to nano as everyday objects zoom into focus! Dissolve a virtual crystal, build a carbon nanotube and pull apart a virtual DNA molecule as you explore the hidden layers of the world around us. Use all your senses to discover how scientists are working on the molecular level to create very, very small structures and devices. For more information call 937-275-7431 or log onto www.boonshoftmuseum.org

President’s Corner

With the New Year I am pleased to welcome two new members to the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau Board---- Ken Neufeld, President & CEO, Victoria Theatre Association and Janet Wood, General Manager, Red Roof Inn Dayton North. They join our other talented and dedicated board members who collectively bring a diversity of professional experiences and assets that contribute to the continued successes of the CVB. I am proud to share some of the CVB’s recent successes in our on-going effort to bring groups, events and people to Dayton/Montgomery County.

The CVB and Montgomery County hotels/meeting venues have recently confirmed a booking for the Aldersgate Renewal Ministries 2011 National Conference which will bring nearly 2,000 people into our community generating nearly 700 hotel room nights’ usage and approximately half a million dollars in estimated economic impact. Additionally both the Battelle for Kids’ Headquarters and Teaching and Learning Center 2010 Teachers’ Conference and The Mars Society Thirteenth International Convention will host their events in Dayton/Montgomery County in August of 2010, collectively bringing nearly 1,000 people into the area and generating nearly three hundred thousand dollars in economic impact. As an organization and a community we look forward to hosting numerous large annual events in 2010 ranging from Winter Guard International, Hamvention, adidas Warrior Soccer, and the Mead CUSA Cup Tournament among others.

I encourage our newsletter readers to reflect on the various professional, civic, sport and social organizations of which you are a member. Do those groups host conventions, meetings, reunions, tournaments or events? Please provide the CVB with any event ideas or leads and our professional staff will work to bring those groups to Dayton/Montgomery County. Our services are free and turn-key; however, it often takes the personal connection of an individual group member (providing us with that business lead) to help us book a convention or event in Dayton/Montgomery County. Be an ambassador for Dayton/ Montgomery County, make us aware of a group we can bring to our community and our staff will handle the rest! Contact the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau today to learn how the CVB can save you time and money by providing complimentary assistance to bring your next social or business group's event to Dayton, The Birthplace of Aviation! Log onto our website www.daytoncvb.com; or call our offices 800-221-8235 for assistance, ideas and suggestions.

Wishing you and Dayton/Montgomery County a prosperous 2010!
