Presidents CornerOn behalf of the Dayton/Montgomery County Convention & Visitors Bureau I am extremely pleased to announce that Winter Guard International Sport of the Arts (WGI) has committed to hosting their World Championship events in Dayton through 2019. Following a presentation to the WGI Board and a subsequent vote, Dayton was selected as the site for the April WGI Color Guard and Percussion World Championships through 2019. We are extremely proud to be affiliated with an organization as outstanding as WGI. In addition to the honor and privilege of hosting the WGI World Championships, we also benefit from the enormous positive economic impact these events have on our community. Each April the WGI World Championships, over two weekends, collectively bring nearly 40,000 people, and generate approximately $15 million dollars of economic impact for the Greater Dayton area. That's outside people coming into our community and leaving their dollars behind. In fact, if you look at WGI's current commitment to host their World Championships in Dayton through 2019-that is 8 years of events starting in 2012---collectively, WGI will bring 320,000 people into our area and generate $120 million in economic impact for our community. This is big business for the Greater Dayton region and it represents a significant contribution to the economic vitality of our area. The WGI World Championship events fill hotels throughout Dayton/Montgomery County and Greene County. Competition sites include UD Arena, WSU Nutter Center, Dayton Convention Center, and the James Trent Arena. Numerous area gyms, schools and churches are utilized as practice sites throughout the weekend. The Finals are always held on Saturday evening at the University of Dayton Arena. WGI Sport of the Arts is the world's premier organization producing indoor color guard and percussion ensemble competitions. As a non-profit youth organization, WGI serves as the leading governing body of the winter guard and indoor percussion activities. It is called the Sport of the Arts because it brings music to life through performance in a competitive format. WGI Sport of the Arts exists to foster positive experiences for all who participate, by promoting education, creativity, and freedom of expression through the unification of the marching arts industry, music education, and the performing arts. As a community we are proud to have been home to 25 of WGI's 34 World Championships to date, as well as a host site for numerous regional championships. Additionally WGI moved their headquarters to Miamisburg, Ohio from Wheaton, Colorado in 2002. WGI is an important and positive part of the fabric of our community and the CVB and its partners are committed to making WGI's experiences in our community a very positive one through 2019 and beyond.
