Winter Guard International is the leading organization in indoor color guard, percussion and winds competition, bringing together the best performers for an extraordinary showcase of athleticism and artistry. Dayton has secured hosting this INTERNATIONAL event through 2031 and is the largest attended event in our community yearly!

2. NCAA® First Four

The Dayton region is recognized as the Epicenter of College Basketball.  Fans from around the world know that THE ROAD STARTS HERE™, in Dayton, Ohio!  In fact, UD Arena has hosted more NCAA® men's Division I basketball tournament games - 137 as of 2024 - than any other venue in the nation! Dayton looks forward to welcoming the NCAA® First Four® back to the University of Dayton Arena in 2025 - and we're excited by the recent announcement that UD Arena will host the First Four® through 2028!

3. Travel Baseball Rankings World Series

The Travel Baseball Rankings (TBR) World Series has become a major event in the world of competitive youth baseball. Founded by Jesse Rentfrow, TBR fills the gap in travel baseball rankings by considering results from a wide variety of tournaments across 34 states. TBR’s commitment to high-level competition, user input from local teams, and its focus on team name changes and player movement sets it apart from other ranking systems. The TBR Elite World Series, which features top teams from across North America, has grown rapidly in recent years, offering competitive opportunities in locations like New York, Missouri, and Ohio. With a focus on ensuring quality games, proper facilities, and fair competition, TBR has become a trusted name for travel baseball teams seeking top-tier tournaments. In 2024, Rentfrow received Destination Dayton's Community Ambassador Award in recognition of the event's significant economic impact.

4. Flyin' to the Hoop

Flyin' to the Hoop, held annually in Dayton, is one of the top high school basketball showcases in the nation, drawing over 20,000 fans, college coaches, and media. Since its inception in 2003, the event has not only become a major highlight for high school athletes but also generates over $1.9 million annually for the local economy. With 100 alumni drafted into the NBA (or NFL or MLB), it’s a pivotal event for both players and the Dayton community.

5. Hamvention®

Since 1952, Hamvention® has been sponsored by Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA). For many years it has been the world’s largest amateur radio gathering, attracting hams from throughout the globe. In 1964, the Hamvention® moved to Hara Arena and in 1973, it became a two-day event. The program has now grown to a "Souvenir Program". With its rich historical connections to aviation and communication technology, the event serves as a testament to the Dayton region's legacy of innovation.

6. adidas Warrior Soccer

Dayton proudly hosts the adidas Warrior Soccer Classic (Memorial Day Weekend & a Fall Tournament), a premier youth soccer tournament that attracts over 300 teams and thousands of spectators from across the region. Established in 1985, the event showcases players from U8 (Under 8) to U19 (Under 19) in thrilling matches held at top facilities throughout Montgomery County. Organized by the Warrior Soccer Club, the tournament highlights competition, sportsmanship, and community spirit while making a significant economic impact. Visitors also enjoy Dayton and Montgomery County’s cultural attractions, making this event a celebration of both soccer and the community.

7. The Association of Lincoln Presenters

The Association of Lincoln Presenters (ALP) is a group of passionate individuals committed to bringing the lives of Abraham and Mary Lincoln to the stage. Through educational, entertaining, and inspiring presentations, members strive to honor their legacy, preserving their words and actions while walking in their footsteps to keep their memory alive. How cool that this group chose to spend their time in Dayton after Abraham Lincoln himself once visited the Montgomery County Courthouse Square to give a speech prior to his election in 1859?!

8. Ninth & Tenth (Horse) Calvary Association

Destination Dayton proudly hosted the Ninth & Tenth (Horse) Cavalry Association, National Buffalo Soldiers, in Dayton for their 158th Reunion, that took place from July 21-28. The Buffalo Soldiers, one of the most revered military units in U.S. history, played a crucial role in the defense of the nation from 1866 to 1944. This historical organization is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the 9th and 10th Cavalry through educational efforts that highlight their accomplishments. The 2024 reunion celebrated the connections between Dayton and the Buffalo Soldiers, including the legacy of Brigadier General Charles Young, a local hero, and Lieutenant John Alexander, the first Black officer in the U.S. Army to command a unit. With local landmarks like the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument and the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center, Dayton was honored to host this significant event.

9. Navy SSP Hypersonic Innovation Conference

The 2024 Hypersonic Innovation Conference in Dayton played a crucial role in advancing hypersonic technology for the Department of Defense. As global competitors push forward with their technological advancements, it’s essential for the U.S. to accelerate its own efforts. This conference brings together senior leaders to discuss the urgent need for rapid hypersonic development, offering a platform for open dialogue to address the nation's most complex technical and strategic challenges.

10. Rainbow National Dance Competition

Rainbow National Dance Competition is committed to hosting a top-tier dance event that creates meaningful experiences for dancers, teachers, and parents alike. With thousands of participants across all ages, talents, and abilities, Rainbow offers a positive and exhilarating competition where every performer has the opportunity to shine. The event also recognizes the dedication and achievements of teachers, choreographers, and parents, celebrating the hard work behind each performance. The event proudly serves as a platform for talent and commitment, ensuring that everyone’s contribution is acknowledged and celebrated.

11. Marine Corps Birthday Ball

The Marine Corps Birthday Ball, a time-honored celebration of the history, legacy, and traditions of the United States Marine Corps commemorates the founding of the Corps in 1775. This prestigious gathering not only celebrates the Corps’ rich history but also emphasizes the continued importance of recruiting and inspiring the next generation of Marines to serve and protect our nation. The Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Dayton reflects the community’s deep respect for military service and the enduring spirit of the Marines.

12. Ohio New Teacher Summit

National Heritage Academies (NHA) supports new teachers through its New Teacher Summit, a three-day training event designed to help educators starting their first year. The summit provides valuable resources and guidance, addressing common anxieties such as mastering new curriculum and creating a positive classroom culture. This program equips new teachers with the tools and confidence they need to succeed in their roles. Looking toward the future, investing in our teachers equips students in the long run.

13. WWII Glider Pilots Reunion

The 52nd Reunion of the National WWII Glider Pilot’s Association took place in Dayton, Ohio, from May 3 to May 5, 2024, celebrating the bravery and legacy of the glider pilots who flew daring missions behind enemy lines during World War II. Attendees also had the opportunity to visit the WACO Museum and the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. The event underscored Dayton’s connection to aviation history, as the city is home to the Wright Brothers, whose pioneering work in aviation set the stage for the incredible feats of the glider pilots. With their distinctive "G" wings symbolizing courage, the glider pilots’ legacy lives on through the Association’s ongoing support for the Silent Wings Museum and efforts to educate future generations about these unsung heroes.

14. Shake The Ground/Universal Ballet Regionals

Shake The Ground Regionals is a premier dance competition that has garnered rave reviews for its high standards of professionalism and proficiency. Known for its state-of-the-art video judging and online registration system, Shake The Ground sets a new benchmark in the industry. As a nonprofit, dancers at Shake The Ground competitions enjoy unique opportunities, including FREE master classes with world-renowned instructors, special awards, and the chance to win scholarships to top dance programs. Every season, Shake The Ground awards over $200,000 in summer intensive scholarships to talented dancers, giving them access to prestigious programs like the Joffrey Ballet School and Broadway Dance Theater. With opportunities for dancers to qualify for Nationals, this regional competition offers an unforgettable experience filled with excitement and growth.

15. USS James C. Owens Reunion

Named after Lieutenant James C. Owens, a hero of the Battle of Midway, the ship served from World War II through the Cold War. The reunion brought together veterans and families to honor the legacy of those who served aboard the vessel, celebrating their contributions and camaraderie. This event serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of service and sacrifice in the U.S. Navy.

16. North American Scrabble Players Association

If Scrabble just so happens to be your favorite game, then this is the association that you should join! NASPA fosters a safe environment for people of all skill levels. They encourage players to improve their abilities and above all, meet people who share a similar love of the game. This group is home to tournament players, club players and even avid at home Scrabble players. 

17. Lionel Operating Train Society

The Lionel Operating Train Society (LOTS), founded in 1979 by Larry Keller in Cincinnati, is a beloved national organization dedicated to operators and collectors of Lionel® trains and accessories. With over 1,800 active members worldwide, LOTS has become a hub for model train enthusiasts who enjoy building layouts, operating vintage and modern trains, and restoring classic engines. From the milk cars and Santa Fe diesels of the past to modern Lionel creations. Members explore various aspects of the hobby, including scenery, electronics, repairs, and lighting, all while sharing their love for trains in an informal, fun environment. Not only does Dayton love to host groups who have strong initiatives, but we also love to host hobby style groups with unique characteristics.

18. Johnny Appleseed District Convention

This event was a gathering of harmony enthusiasts from one of the 17 North American districts of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Founded in 1944, the Johnny Appleseed District is dedicated to preserving and promoting the uniquely American art form of barbershop quartet singing. This convention brought together talented vocalists, captivating performances, and a vibrant community spirit, highlighting Dayton’s rich musical heritage (like jazz) and its reputation as a hub for cultural events.

19. USA Archery

Athletes from across the country gathered to showcase their skills in one of the world’s oldest and most precise sports. Founded in 1879, USA Archery is dedicated to promoting and growing the sport of archery while enabling U.S. athletes to achieve excellence in Olympic, Paralympic, and international competitions. USA Archery sanctions over 350 events annually, including national championships and the U.S. Archery Team Qualifier Series, offering opportunities for athletes at all levels—from youth programs to elite competitors. Dayton is growing youth passion one sport at a time!

20. Blacks in Government

Blacks In Government® (BIG), is a trailblazing organization established in 1975 to advocate for equity, excellence, and opportunity for Black public service employees. Founded to address systemic challenges faced by Black employees at all levels of government, BIG has grown into a vital network fostering professional development, inclusion, and advocacy. The conference brought together leaders, changemakers, and professionals dedicated to justice and equality, reinforcing Dayton's role as a hub for meaningful dialogue and progress. Hosting this impactful event highlights the city’s commitment to diversity, equity, and empowering future leaders.

21. LPGA Women’s Senior Open

Conducted solely by the USGA, this championship has been a cornerstone of the LPGA Tour since its inception in 1946, making it the longest-running tournament on the circuit. As one of the LPGA’s five major championships, the U.S. Women’s Open showcases the world’s top female golfers competing at the highest level. One of the most prestigious events in Women's golf, Dayton is proud to have been a host for this event. Fans had an opportunity to witness history in the making!

22. PGA Men’s Senior Open

Ready to tee off for some more? We've previously welcomed the PGA Men's Senior Open to Montgomery County, bringing golf legends to our community! Dayton's pristine courses and welcoming community created the perfect backdrop for unforgettable competition between the most skilled and dedicated top senior golfers IN THE WORLD!

23. Inter Church Holiness Convention

The InterChurch Holiness Convention (IHC) is a worldwide network of organizations and ministries united in their commitment to "Spreading Scriptural Holiness across these lands." Rooted in Wesleyan-Arminian doctrine and belief, the IHC fosters a welcoming community that promotes holiness and spiritual growth. Through its events, the IHC brings together believers from diverse backgrounds, encouraging fellowship, worship, and the pursuit of holy living. The convention continues to serve as a beacon for those seeking to live out their faith in alignment with scriptural teachings and to strengthen the global movement of holiness.

24. Silver Stick Hockey

Silver Stick is an organization that hosts numerous youth AA and below regional hockey tournaments in Canada and the United States, with regional championships advancing to the International Finals. Each year, the tournament also gives out the Larry McGrath scholarship to Canadian and American students in their final year of high school who have participated or volunteered in Silver Stick. Dayton is honored to play a pivotal role in youth hockey. When it comes to youth and amateur sports, Dayton's "got game."

25. OHSAA Boys and Girls State Basketball, Track & Field, Golf

The OHSAA Boys and Girls State Basketball, Track & Field, and Golf Championships are premier events that bring together Ohio’s top competitors to showcase their talent and determination, making Dayton a central hub for high school sports excellence. Whether it’s the fast-paced action of state basketball, the thrill of track and field, or the precision of golf, these competitions are a testament to the dedication and skill of Ohio’s young athletes. Hosting these prestigious events in Dayton allows the community to witness firsthand the future stars of the sports world, all while enjoying the energy and excitement that comes with state-level competition. It’s truly a special opportunity to cheer on the next generation of champions right here in our city!

26. Fédération Aéronautique Internationale

FAI is the World Air Sports Federation that was founded in 1905. The organization is non-governmental and non-profit making with the main goal of furthering aeronautical and astronautical activities worldwide. Due to the fact that the organization has more than 90 member countries, the 2023 conference being held in Dayton was sort of a big deal. This conference was the first to be held in the United States since 1983 AND the first in-person FAI conference since the COVID pandemic! 

27. Southern Christian Leadership Conference

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was founded in 1957 with the mission to redeem "the soul of America" through nonviolent resistance. Under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., SCLC became a vital force in the Civil Rights Movement, organizing campaigns that led to the passage of landmark legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Known for its commitment to Christian nonviolence, SCLC coordinated major events such as the March on Washington and played a pivotal role in voter registration drives, local protests, and economic justice campaigns. Today, the SCLC continues its work advocating for social, economic, and political justice through nonviolent action across the nation (including in Dayton). 

28. Oldsmobile Club of America

The Oldsmobile Club of America (OCA), founded in 1970, honors the long legacy of Oldsmobile, a brand that revolutionized the automotive world. From the 1897 hand-built wooden carriage to the final 2004 Alero, Oldsmobile’s innovations, continue to inspire automotive enthusiasts. Dayton’s own legacy of innovation, exemplified by the Wright brothers and pioneers like Charles Kettering—who developed the electric starter—plays a key role in the story of Oldsmobile’s success. The OCA celebrates every aspect of this rich history, bringing together enthusiasts of antique, performance, and modified Oldsmobile vehicles. Members, whether they own an Oldsmobile or not, gain access to the club’s resources, including the monthly Journey with Olds magazine and an extensive online library to continue exploring the automotive advancements (some of which were pioneered in Dayton).

29. Fairlane Club of America

Founded in 1981 by Glenn D. Packard, the FCA began with a focus on the high-performance 289 4V "K-cars," known for their powerful engines shared with Carroll Shelby's iconic Cobras. Over the years, the club expanded to celebrate an array of intermediate-sized Ford and Mercury models, preserving their rich automotive legacy. Dayton was thrilled to host the Fairlane Club of America National Meet, bringing together enthusiasts of classic Ford Fairlanes, Torinos, and Mercury equivalents from 1962-1979. This event showcased meticulously restored vehicles, from early Fairlanes to 1970s Rancheros and LTD IIs, connecting car lovers through a shared passion for engineering and design.

30. Grand American World Trapshooting Championships

Held in Vandalia from 1923 to 2005, the Grand American World Trapshooting Championships is the premier shooting event in the world, drawing participants from around the globe. Spanning 11 days, the competition featured 24 events and attracted more than 5,000 shooters each year! The first five days of the tournament, known as "Preliminary Days," allowed competitors to refine their skills before heading into the championship events of "Grand Week." Over the years, well-known folks such as Annie Oakley, Roy Rogers and John Philip Sousa participated in the events. Exhibitors were also on site to provide products and services from guns to shooting accessories and apparel, but ultimately the participants' hopes & dreams were to claim one of the available prestigious titles, such as "Clay Target Champion."
