25. Cassano's The Pizza King

Dayton’s first Cassano’s pizza restaurant opened in June of 1953.  It all began in a 20’ x 15’ room adjoining a small grocery store on Schantz Avenue in Kettering, Ohio. Vic Cassano Sr., along with his mother-in-law Mom Donisi, took the advice of a family friend who owned a party supply store in which they began selling their Cassano family treat, pizza, in the back of the store. Cassano’s was Dayton’s first taste of pizza, and on their opening day they sold 400 pizzas. Now a popular and extensive chain of Cassano’s restaurants keeps pizza lovers happy in Greater Dayton! 

26. Hickory Bar-B-Q

Joseph and Irene Kiss, both of Hungarian descent, immigrated to the United States and Canada as children, facing challenges and separation from family. After serving in the U.S. Airborne, Joe worked as a bartender where he met Irene, and they married in 1947. The couple eventually opened several bars and a grocery store before partnering with Irene’s brother, Steve Kolb, to establish Old Hickory Bar-B-Q on Brown Street in 1962. After buying out Steve and Sylvia in 1989, they renamed it Joe Kiss’s Hickory Bar-B-Q. Together, Joe and Irene worked hard, serving delicious dishes like Irene’s mother’s Hungarian cabbage rolls. Joe passed away in 1995, but the restaurant remains family-owned, with Irene and their daughters continuing the legacy, ensuring that all three daughters and their families have been involved in the business over the years serving up chicken, ribs, steaks & more in their family-friendly environment!
