Destination Dayton is pleased to welcome the Ninth & Tenth (Horse) Cavalry Association, National Buffalo Soldiers to Dayton for their 158th Reunion, July 21-28.

The Association is an official military unit representing one of the most famed military units in the history of the American Armed Forces–the Buffalo Soldiers. This historical educational organization is dedicated to teaching the history of the many accomplishments of the 9th and 10th Cavalry, U.S. Army in the defense of our country from 1866 to 1944.

“We’re honored to welcome this prestigious organization to Dayton for the first time, as they work to preserve the legacy of these brave soldiers,” said Destination Dayton President & CEO Jacquelyn Powell. “Dayton has long been a military town, and each year we host a wide range of military reunions in Montgomery County.”

The theme for the Association’s 2024 reunion is “Honoring our Wilberforce Buffalo Soldiers,” in recognition of Dayton area connections to the Buffalo Soldiers:

Brigadier General Charles Young, the 3rd Black Graduate of West Point, grew up in Ripley, Ohio and was stationed for a time in Wilberforce, and Lieutenant John Alexander, the first black officer in the U.S. Army to command a unit (9th Cavalry B Troop in 1889) and the 2nd Black graduate of West Point, was sent to Wilberforce University, as a professor of military science and tactics. Additionally, the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument (part of the National Park Service) and the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center are located in Wilberforce.

Those ties played a part in the Association choosing Dayton to host the 2024 reunion.

“The Dayton community has embraced the Buffalo Soldiers Association, and we are excited to plan an amazing slate of activities with many different community venues. The Association looks forward to coming to Dayton later this month,” said Trooper Nina M. Amos, National President of the Ninth & Tenth (Horse) Cavalry Association, National Buffalo Soldiers. “And we also look forward to placing a special marker at the Charles Young House Museum.”
