Overview

Works by Stanford and Beethoven along with Beach’s historical “Gaelic Symphony.”

“Oh, how beautiful it is to live – and live a thousand times over,” Beethoven wrote to a friend, following the tortured confessional letter that revealed his near-suicidal anguish over growing deaf. He chose life so that he might express through his art all that was still in his soul. Composed against this backdrop, his jubilant Second Symphony is proof of his will to live. Irish-inspired music bookends Beethoven. Stanford’s delightful Irish Rhapsody weaves its emerald magic around the traditional “Londonderry Air” (a.k.a. “Danny Boy”), and we salute another Woman of Note, Amy Beach – the first American woman to compose and publish a symphony – and her charming “Gaelic Symphony,” based on old Irish songs.
