Overview

Dayton Philharmonic Concertmaster Jessica Hung steps into the solo spotlight for Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, a towering creation of dramatic impact (some violinists have dubbed it their “Mount Everest”). Scaling this musical mountain lets performers reveal their emotional depth in its lyrical passages and their technical mastery in its dazzling fireworks.

The Symphonic Dances were latter-day-Romantic Sergei Rachmaninoff’s last orchestral work…and what a magnificent swan song it is! Listen for the haunting sound of an alto saxophone, tubular bells, mysterious evocations of Russian Orthodox chants, and his signature Dies irae.

The concert opens with Lili Boulanger’s lovely mini-tone poem Of a Morning in Spring, channeling impressionist sonorities.
