Works by Reena Esmail, Dvořák, and Stravinsky. Cellist Adrian Daurov takes center stage.
Ethnic roots run deep in this concert… from Bohemia to Russia to far-off India. Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, with returning soloist Adrian Daurov, is intense, charged with emotion, and considered by many the greatest ever composed for the instrument. In the ballet Petrushka, Stravinsky created an exhilarating new world of sound based on Russian folk tunes and popular songs to tell the story of a tragic love triangle among puppets at a Shrovetide fair. Our Woman of Note for this performance, Reena Esmail, conjures a three-statue sculpture in front of the residence of first Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru with a work that evokes the timelessness, energy, and virtuosity of traditional Hindustani music.
