Overview

Dubbed “The First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums. Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate and ageless. The Dayton Philharmonic is honored to welcome guest vocalist Carmen Bradford to center stage at the Schuster to honor this music legend. Carmen Bradford is jazz royalty. Her grandfather Melvin Moore sang with Dizzy Gillespie’s Big Band and with the Ink Spots, and her parents are legendary coronetist and composer Bobby Bradford and world-renowned jazz vocalist, composer, and author Melba Joyce. It was no surprise, then, that at the age of 22, Carmen was discovered and hired by William “Count” Basie and became the featured vocalist in the legendary Count Basie Orchestra for nine years. Carmen Bradford and the Dayton Philharmonic bring a showstopping performance to the Schuster as together they honor the Queen of Jazz herself, Ella Fitzgerald.
