A teacher once wrote in Mike Peters’ yearbook, “Better start growing up, you can’t always draw cartoons!” Fifty years, one Pulitzer Prize and many other awards later, Mike Peters is still drawing cartoons. A half century of his artwork is celebrated in “What A Hoot!” a retrospective of his work on display at the Dayton Metro Library, through May 11.

Mike Peters has drawn nine U.S. Presidents and created a successful comic strip, Mother Goose and Grimm, which has been published worldwide since 1984. He won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning and the National Cartoonists Society’s 1991 Reuben Award for cartoonist of the year. The University of Dayton awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters Degree in 1998. He began working for the Dayton Daily News in 1969 and his cartoons became nationally syndicated in 1972.

“What a Hoot!” celebrates CMG’s 50-year relationship with Peters. The artwork on display comes from the cartoon museum at the Ohio State University Library.
